Root-stock stout, running underground. Stems tufted, thorny with recurved spines, 125-30 meter tall, 15-20 cm in diameter. Stem sheaths coriaceous, striate, with rounded tip and plaited margins. Leaves linear-lanceolate with stiff tip. Inflorescence an enormous panicle distributed along the entire length of the stem. Common and abundant tree-grass all over.
Flowering & Fruiting Period: 20 – 40 years approximately. Some are known to flower after 100 years.
