Agni (Mand, Madhyam and Tivra)

The Ayurveda term Agni implies to Fire. The terms Mand, Madhyam and Tivra basically referes to three specifc flame controls applied while preparing formulations. Here Mand referes to Low-flame; Madhya referes to Medium flame and Tivra refers to high intensity flames. Ancient Ayurveda practioners used to determine these degrees on basis of amount of wood or cow-dung cakes to be used to light up the furnace. The forms of Agni can be synonymously co-related to the degree of Put(Skt.) used specifically to prepare Bhasmas. (For ex. Gajput, Laghuput etc.) Apart from these three common categories one also comes across specifically 6 types of Agni described for medicinal preparation. (Kashtman & Dhoomagni, Deepagni & Mandaagni, Kharagni & Madhyam-agni, Bhada-agni). However these all types can be in-coporated or co-related with the above discussed 3 main types of agni
