PREPARATION

Kutki, Saindhav Lavan, Jeerak, Krishna Jeerak, Pippali, Patha, Ashwagandha, Shunthi, Ajmoda, Shankhpushpi and Marich are collected fresh in equal proportions. The wet plants are dried in shade. On drying, Vacha in equal proportion to the rest of the mixture is added and the entire contents are pounded to form a coarse powder. The powder is filtered through a muslin cloth. The remaining filterate is again pounded and filtered. The process is repeated till all of the mixture attains a uniform fine grain status in accordance with the Churna definition standards described in the treatise. The mixture is then processed in Brahmi Swaras (fresh leaf juice) and allwoed to dry.The resultant mixture is known as Saraswat Churn.

NOTE

  • Certain scholars inform that Saraswat Curn must be given 3 treatments with Brahmi juice. It is also mentioned that , more the number of treatmentrs the more the potency of medicine incresaes. Ayurvedsarsangrah advise to take Brahmi in 1/2 the proporton of prepared Saraswat Churn and prepare a decoction from Brahmi. Saraswat Churn must be treated with the Brahmi decoction 3 times. It does not advocate the use of fresh Juice. Another interesting point while preparing Saraswat Churn is the collection time of Brahmi. Many scholars indicate that Brahmi to be use for the preparation must be collected during Pushya Nakshatra (specific constellation as per hindu astrological data ) to improve the efficacy of Sarswat Churn.

  • The resultant Churna texture is described in various treatise in accordance of the size of the particles of the Churna fit for consumption. Herbal powders termed as Churnas are used for internal as well as external application. Internally they are used as nasal snuffs and as consumable medicine. The grain particle size for each of the mentioned application is clearly defined in the texts.
