Bhavprakash and Charak have described two varieties of Trivrut; Shwet-Trivrut (bearing White root) and Shyaam-Trivrut (bearing Black or dark-coloured root). The taxon Operculina turpethum is co-related to Shwet-Trivrut while Marsedenia tenacissima is co-related to Shyam-Trivrut by many scholars. However this information is arguable. A scan of prevelant ethnomedicinal works by authors like Vaidya Daji Pade refer Shyam-Trivrut and Shwet-Trivrut to be varieties of same plant species. The plant varieties need further investigation with respect to taxonomical dimensions. The popularly accepted or discussed taxons as the probable source of both the varities of Trivrut are enumerated.
