Renuka

ABOUT

Renuka is a disputed plant with respect to identity. A thorough probe of the documentation on plants done by Local Healers refer to Renuka as a plant being similar to Tambool (Piper betle). Hence many species of Piperaceae family are discussed. Renuka is traded for its seeds and is locally popular as Renukabeej. Its seeds are described to be similar to Kankol(Piper cubeba). Certian scholars from North-India correlate the local plant Sambhalu with Renuka. Sambhalu is identified as Vitex negundo which is the accepted source of the classical plant Nirgundi . Hence Renuka can also be accepted as certain species of the genus Vitex. The other synonyms of Renuka like Harenuka, Irenuka can be correlated with various species ; (Amomum subulatum (Harenuka), Piper attentuatum (Irenuka))etc. Hence it is not clearly definitive as to the exact identity.
