Ras-Sindoor (Antardhoom)

PREPARATION

8 Tola Shudh(purified)Parad, 2 Tola Shudh Gandhak are blended together to form Kajjali. The entire mixture is then transferred to Kaach-Kupi (glass flask, see glossary). The Kaach-Kupi is layered 7 times with cloth plastered with wet-mud/clay and the Kaach-Kupi is placed in a pit-hole 1-2 feet deep half covered with sand. The remaining part of the pit is then covered with dry branches and the pit is set on fire. This setup is known as Adhsaikatyantra (see Glossary).On cooling Ras-Sindoor which gets accumlated at the mouth of the Kaach-Kupi is collected and stored.

NOTE

  • Yog Ratnakar in his description of Ras-Sindoor preparation mentions that before the Valukayantra is exposed to flames, a puja (religious ritual) must be perfomed by 5 Kumarika (Virgins/ or women who have not attained puberty) on the equipment to ensure succcess of the Project. This indicates the precision and attention to detail required while making Kupi-Pakva Rasayans like Ras-Sindoor

  • The above method is termed as Antardhoom (Gandhak is digested with Parad) way of producing Ras-Sindoor. Yogratnakar has mentioned another way of making Ras-Sindoor where Gandhak fumes are not digested withb Parad and let outside. This method is known as Bahirdhoom way of making Ras-Sindoor which is considered to have less medicinal potential then Antardhoom method.

  • Kajjali prepared in the above formulation must adhere or comply with the Kajjali preparation description and standards as mentioned in various Ayurveda treatise.(see glossary)
