The Ayurveda term Arka implies to herbal extract or essences obtained by distillation of water soaked raw drugs.. These contain the volatile constituents of the drugs used, in a medium of water. They are the equivalent to the aquae or waters of Western Pharmacopoeia. The process is carried out in a special apparatus called Ark-Patan Yantra which is very similar to modern day distillation apparatus. Arka methodology is an recent addition to Ayurveda and is not mentioned in ancient ayurveda formularly works most probably after the British invasion of India.
