Padmakashta / Padmabeej

Padmakashta is a disputed plant with respect to identity. Since Padma word is very common in terms of Sanskrit literature and primarily refers to lotus many scholars believe Padmakashta to be a type of Rose, Lotus or Lily. Certain scholars do not treat Padmakashta as a individual entity but merely refer it to various aspects of Lotus or Lily. For example the term Kashta implies to stem or branch and is considred as the stem of Lotus or Lily. Similarly Padmabeej (The synonym of Padmakashta) is referred to as the seeds of Rose, Lotus or Lily(Beej == Seed). Padmakashta and Padmabeeja are also considered separate plants. The seeds of Eurayle ferox are also accepted as Padmabeej.Certain scholars also accept Padmakashta as a synonym of the plant Yashtimadhu(Glychrizza glabra).The following plant species are discussed.
